Mahadeo Shivraj has been active in the theatre for the past 23 years as actor, producer, director and set-designer. He made his debut at the National Cultural Centre in Guyana and to date has acted in over 90 plays professionally in Guyana and the USA. He has directed approximately 30 plays and did the set-design for everyone. He is the creator and director of the hit stage series – “LAFF TIL YUH BELLY BUST” now in its 7th year.
He has acted in the independent films: Playing Both Sides, Deep Trouble, Pressure, Snitch in New York, The Laverne Affair, Kicking it High, Sacrifice, Truth, Karma and The Awakening. He has done work as a background actor in many television shows like The Sopranos, Hope and Faith, The Jury, Cosby, Law and Order, Law and Order Criminal Intent, Law and Order Special Victims Unit and also many Hollywood Movies. He was featured in a non-speaking part in Cop Shop with Academy Award Winner Richard Dreyfuss , as an anesthesiologist in the TV show “3 lbs”, with Brooke Shields in “Lipstick Jungle” and Ted Danson in “Damages”. He had a speaking part as a “forensic expert” on an episode of 100 Center Street directed by veteran director Sidney Lumet, well-known for the films ‘SERPICO’ and ‘DOG DAY AFTERNOON’ with Al Pacino. He had a speaking role as a ‘vendor’ in an episode of NBC’S award winning series “30 ROCK” which is entitled “FIREWORKS” in which he acted in two scenes alongside the leading lady – Tina Fey. The show also stars Alec Baldwin. He played opposite Academy Award Winner - Holly Hunter in “Speechless”. He recently played a lead role in “WE ARE NEW YORK’ in an episode entitled ‘NO SMOKING’ which is presently being aired on cable television. He also acted recently as a bellhop in the film – “Three Backyards” which stars Elias Koteas and Edie Falco of the Sopranos.
Shiv is constantly lending his talents as a volunteer for quite a few humanitarian organizations in Guyana and the USA. Besides winning awards he has been recognized many times by his peers, many different organizations and even by the City of New York for his work in the Arts. The movie Till I Find A Place marks his debut as a screenplay writer, film producer and film director. On top of it all he plays the lead role in the film. He studied at the Herbert Berghof Studios in New York City and New York University and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He is set to shoot a new film in October entitled – “My Brother , My Wife and I” for which he wrote the screenplay based on a play by Ronald Hollingsworth in which he will be starring as well as producing and directing. He is also in pre-production for the first soap opera in Guyana – “Full Moon Dulahin” written by Churaumanie Bissundyal in which he will also star, produce and direct. Shooting for this is in February/March 2011. He was just filmed in a small speaking role in the Hollywood blockbuster entitled THE SMURFS which is set to be released in 2011.
